Memorial Day

Neighborly Deed

Knowing how much I enjoy playing and singing the old hymns, a neighbor gave me hymnal dated 1942 called 'Upper Room Hymns".

I enjoyed finding many songs I have not heard since childhood. Does anyone remember this?

Look all around you, find someone in need.

I went to bed last night troubled about my neighbor who has had three heart attacks in the month of May, The doctor says they can do no more for her and she must go to a nursing home, As I was praying for her, this old hymn came to mind and brought me peace.

Reminiscing with my brother

Yesterday was my brother's 70th birthday. We were emailing back and forth about childhood memories. We remember standing out in the dark and seeing Sputnik move across the sky in 1957.
Our baby sister Mildred was only a few weeks old.

My brother has always been fascinated with planes, rockets, and technology.

We also recalled our grandparents telling how amazed they were the first time they saw an airplane fly over Alpharetta, GA. The first flight landed at Candler air field in Atlanta in 1926 when Grandmother was 32 years old. Today the International airport in Atlanta is the busiest in the world.

Things to be glad about

We enjoyed the story of Pollyanna
who liked to play the Glad Game.
"If God took the time to tell us 800 times to 
be glad and rejoice
He must expect us to do it some!"
We looked for a rainbow after the thunder shower and didn't see one, but my granddaughter showed me how to make a rainbow using a CD to reflect the afternoon sun on white paper.
Then we went to the play ground and a robin scolded Kaedyn, but she was glad that it caused her to notice the nest of blue eggs hidden in the climbing tower. Now we watch each day to see if they have hatched.

The Fabulous Fifties

When I was teaching second grade a few years ago, the reading group was discussing the decade of the fifties. "Well, how lucky these kids are to have me for their teacher!" I thought. "I was born in 1950."

So I gathered pictures and memorabilia, and told them all about how things were way back then.
They were amazed that cameras only took black and white photos, that TV's were a new thing in American households, that phones had rotary dials, and how we went to the library to look up information.

I asked them to write a summary in their journals. One child wrote: "Our teacher went to school in the 1950's. She had to go to the county library to use the computer."

Remembering Mother

It is amazing the way we recall simple kindnesses from decades past. I remember a platform rocker with squeaky springs where Mother sat and rocked me to sleep when I was sick as a young child.

Sometimes we do not realize what a comforting memory a simple act of kindness will make.

At the Pond

May Flowers in New Jersey

Knowing how I love parks and gardens, 
my son Cameron sent me pictures today from New Jersey 
where he has been living for almost two years.
It is a blessing to me to get to hear the church services where he is on staff
live online each week. 
And to hear testimonies of people who are coming to faith in Jesus 
through the outreach ministries.

Peonies

Peonies are the state flower of Indiana. You can see them adorning yards in the spring all around southern Indiana.They come in every color except blue. The plants can live for 100 years. When Marco Polo discovered peonies, he reported "roses as big as cabbages."

Our family gathered at my place to celebrate my granddaughter's birthday today. Happy 15th birthday to Ashlynn! I have to look up to her now!

Balloon Race

Last week Kaedyn got to see the fireworks, air show and hot air balloons in Louisville. I could hear the jets circling overhead, and I watched it all on TV. I think it would be fun to go up in a balloon.
