1996

Indiana University Campus, Southeast
Back to school twenty-five years after graduating from GSU, I went to Indiana University to get certification in special education and return to teaching. I had been at home with four children, and after the death of the youngest, who had multiple disabilities, I wanted to work with children with delays.

I quickly learned that everything had to be done on a computer. My professor told me to find the youngest guy in our class and offer to buy his lunch if he would tutor me! A wonderful young man was eager to help, but shocked that I didn't even know what a cursor was!

At the end of the semester my professor complimented me for having the guts to jump back in at age 46 and tackle all the new technology. Thanks to my young classmate, I was able to present a lecture on Down syndrome using power point.

For many years, I was a developmental therapist, working with young children with disabilities.
I learned more from those families than I could have ever learned from textbooks. When I went back to teaching in public school in 2006, I had a much greater appreciation for all that my students with disabilities had accomplished..

I shared this to show that God will carry us through tough times and will later use the experiences to help us encourage someone else.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:11

What a blessing dedicated special needs teachers are Karen! Our little grandson, Baylor, who is on the autistic spectrum has had some wonderful teachers and therapists. I cannot imagine going back to school in an age where everything had changed. Kudos to you!!

It took strong desire and a lot of strength to go back to school so you could help others. God bless you for all you did for those children

We all are deeper and richer in our past experience than what our simple photo shows of us on our blog. You have benefited a lot of people through your work and God was with you all of the way. You are still a blessing everyday to others.

What a wonderful bible verse to pair with your story. And your story is so inspirational and beautiful. Teachers hold the future in their hands, and should get very high pay! I know you meant so very much to so many kids, and helped form their lives in a good way. These kids need hope, and you were the one to give it to them.

I have found that to be the case over and over that we are able to comfort others with the comfort God has shown to us. I applaud you for your dedication and I share with you that first initial "yikes" over learning about computers in my late 30's. Haha!

My daughter Judie taught special needs students for many years. She amazed me when during a visit, she showed me her blackboard with the schedule for the day in small increments. The students could only be occupied for short bursts of time. Your personal experience gave you a compassion that many teachers might not have. I am certain that you were a blessing to many during your years teaching. You continue to be a blessing to many to this day, just in different ways. I have prayed for your son as he travels to Israel on Oct 4th that he will be protected, sheltered, and will be both blessed and be a blessings.

What a wonderful profession to work with students with disabilities. I love the Ecclesiastes quote. Yes, it seems that everything is on the computer right now, and I'm learning it.....slowly, but surely haha.

This was encouraging! I was in college in 1996 too. I graduated in May of that year.

I like the way you took your experiences and used them to help others.
