FIVE AND DIME

When Alpharetta was a tiny town
We knew all the families up and down
Christmas was an exciting time
Gazing at toys in the Five and Dime.

Etch-A-Sketch was all the craze
We made our list and counted the days
Peeking through the store's window panes
Longing for red and white candy canes.

Christmas morning would finally dawn
We'd rush to the tree with our pajamas on
Ripping the wrapping and tossing the bow
Gasping in glee, "How did Santa know?"

YOUR POEMS ARE ALWAYS DELIGHTFUL, KAREN. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAD SUCH WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS' GROWING UP. MY MOM USED TO PUT A BIG BLACK INITIAL ON THE PRESENTS, TELLING US WHO IT WAS FOR. I ALWAYS GOT SO EXCITED WHEN I SAW AN S. : )

PS....I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND ME USING THE CAPITAL LETTERS. I GOT THE IDEA FROM YOUR PRECIOUS SISTER, MILDRED. I KNOW YOU ARE HAVING A HARD TIME WITH YOUR EYE SIGHT, AND I HOPE IT HELPS YOU TO READ THE COMMENTS BETTER.

I loved the five and dime -- Woolworth's, Kresge's and Grant's. My favorite was looking at the sewing patterns and buying half a yard of cloth to make clothes for my dolls.

Hi Karen,
the memories that I have from my Christmas childhood are all about the nativity - both in school and at home. My dad was a devout Christian and loved talking about the Lord to us. Sadly, he died when I was eleven.

I like the line, How did Santa know. We have a friend that is alone and her cd player broke down. Santa does know what she is getting for Christmas. It makes it more fun when you know that they need something. I like the verses that you write.
