Never Closer

“Heartache forces us to embrace God out of desperate, urgent need.
God is never closer than when your heart is aching.”
Joni Tada
He will raise you up on eagles' wings
Bear you on the breath of dawn
Make you to shine like the sun
And hold you in the palm of His hand.

The Lord is close to those whose hearts are breaking.
Psalm 34:18

Praise the Lord; praise God our Savior!
For each day he carries us in his arms.
Psalm 68:19

When you "carry someone in your arms" for a while, you get to know each other pretty well. I know many families are caring for loved ones with long term illnesses or disabilities. The caregiver understands their invented sign language, the slightest gesture, expression, or cry.

Our Heavenly Father knows us through and through. I believe He hears our prayers before we even know what to ask. He will never leave us or forsake us. Every single day of our lives, He will carry us in His arms. As you carry your loved one, He is carrying you both!

Summer Visits

Lightning bugs, June bugs, bumble bees, butterflies, and humming birds.
Yes, summertime visitors are here!
I am enjoying the longer days, the sunshine and gentle breezes, and visits from my granddaughters.
The girls love spotting birds in the back yard. My neighbor has a humming bird feeder on her patio.

We came across this old photo of Cameron and me visiting them when Kaedyn was newborn and sisters were 10 and 6. Now they are 18, 14, and 7..
Seems like they don't stay little very long!

I'll let you in on the sweet old truths,
Stories we heard from our fathers,
counsel we learned at our mother's knee.
We're not keeping this to ourselves,
we're passing it along to the next generation—
God's fame and fortune,
the marvelous things he has done.
Psalm 78:2-4 Message

Singing God's Word Back to Him in Prayer

LORD, how they are increased who trouble me!
Many are they who rise up against me.
Many are saying of me, There is no help for him in God.
But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.
Psalm 3:1-3

Quiet Place

As I was thinking of many beautiful places
I've been able to enjoy in Indiana
I remembered this song that I used to sing at church
as part of a quartet in college.

There is a quiet place
Far from the rapid pace
Where God can soothe my troubled mind.
Sheltered by tree and flower
There in my quiet hour
With Him my cares are left behind.
Whether a garden small
Or on a  mountain tall,
New strength and courage there I find.
Then from this quiet place
I go prepared to face a new day
With love for all mankind.
Ralph Carmichael, 1967.

Sing for Joy

Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.

Glad We Didn't Have a Computer

Summer Memories from the Fifties and Sixties:
Eating watermelon on Pawpaw's steps
Turning a hand-cranked ice cream freezer
Burying bottled soft drinks in a wash tub of ice for the family reunion
Wading in the creek
Boating at Lake Lanier
Picking blackberries with Grandma for jam and cobbler
Playing in the red dirt in the basement when it was too hot to play outside.
Swinging on a tire swing
Catching flies and grounders on the vacant lot
A yard full of neighborhood kids under the shade trees

Refreshing Breeze

The Lord is my shepherd.
I shall not want.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.

Yesterday was a scorcher here, but in the evening, a refreshing shower rolled in, and the temperature dropped 27 degrees. I had a nice visit with my 87 year old neighbor on the porch.

Lilies and More Lilies!

I am enjoying the many lilies planted all around the property here.  I am thankful for the maintenance team who do such a faithful job with the lawn and garden. Sometimes they are out mowing at sunrise when the weather is as hot as it is now. I am anxiously waiting for the hydrangeas to bloom!

My son Cameron just had his 31st birthday. He is preaching/teaching every other Sunday now at the church where he is on staff. He puts a lot of time into study and prayer and also leads worship each week. He is only an hour from the ocean in New Jersey. I hope he will get to spend some time at the beach this summer.

This day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved,
for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

Last Text Message From Teenage Girl

The 17 year old girl who was killed in a church bus crash in Atlanta this week texted this message to her cousin before her death:
For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of the Lord endures forever.”
And this is the word that was preached to you.
1 Peter 1:23-25
"This is such a great reminder. We are like a wisp of smoke. We are only here for a moment and this not about us, life is not about us, it's about God who is eternal. So, I want to dedicate the one moment I am here, completely and entirely to Him" -Sara Harmening

Just and True

Who is a God like you,
who pardons sin and forgives the transgression
of the remnant of his inheritance?
You do not stay angry forever
    but delight to show mercy.
You will again have compassion on us;
you will tread our sins underfoot
and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.
You will be faithful to Jacob,
    and show love to Abraham,
as you pledged on oath to our ancestors
    in days long ago.
Micah 7:18-20 NIV

Reading from Exodus 2, I thought about Moses' Mom, a Jewish mother who prayed that her son's life would be spared. You know the story of how he was not only rescued by Pharaoh's daughter but she hired his own mother to nurse and keep him until he was old enough to live in Pharaoh's palace.

I wonder how many times Jochebed prayed for Moses to stay true to the God of their fathers in the midst of a people who did not know Him. Jochebed's name means "YAHWEH is glory".

Many years went by before Moses led God's people to freedom from Egyptian bondage. It's amazing how God uses experiences in our lives to prepare us to be fit for His use.

They were singing the song of Moses,
the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb:
"Great and marvelous are your works, O Lord God, the Almighty.
Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations.
Revelation 5:3

Evening, and morning, and at noon,
will I pray,
and cry aloud:
and he shall hear my voice.
Psalm 55:17

Granddaugher Kaedyn spent the day with me this week. She wanted to read from the Bible the story of how Daniel prayed to God three times a day, even when it was against the king's decree. She is attending a reading enrichment class this summer and her big sister Kye is the assistant teacher. Kye plans to major in education.

May those who love the Lord be like the sun when it rises
in all its brightness.
Judges 5:31b God's Word

I remember singing this song as a child in Sunday School.

A sunbeam, a sunbeam,
Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.
A sunbeam, a sunbeam
I'll be a sunbeam for him.

I have a friend, Carolyn, who has faithfully served our church for many years. She has cerebral palsy.

As she ages, her health and skills are failing, yet she always has a bright smile and a word of encouragement for others. She is surely one of Jesus' sunbeams.

Unending Help

May Jesus himself and God our Father,
who reached out in love and surprised you with
gifts of unending help and confidence,
put a fresh heart in you, invigorate your work,
enliven your speech.
2 Thessalonians 2:17 Message

With every sunset comes the promise of a new sunrise.

How wide, how long, how high, and how deep is His love for us.

As you live this new life, we pray that you will be strengthened from God’s boundless resources, so that you will find yourselves able to pass through any experience and endure it with courage. You will even be able to thank God in the midst of pain and distress because you are privileged to share the lot of those who are living in the light.

For we must never forget that he rescued us from the power of darkness, and re-established us in the kingdom of his beloved Son, that is, in the kingdom of light. For it is by his Son alone that we have been redeemed and have had our sins forgiven.
Colossians 1:11-14
