Lamplighter

Many years ago, before the electric light bulb was widely used, the cities used to hire lamplighters to go about the streets at dusk and light the gas lamps. This is the chorus of a song about The Old Lamplighter that Mother used to sing:

He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

I remember how inky black the night was when the electricity was out all over town during a storm, and you couldn't see moon or stars for the heavy cloud cover.

In the Psalms, David must have been remembering how God brought him through storms and dark times when he wrote this verse:

For it is you who light my lamp; the LORD my God lightens my darkness.
Psalm 18:28

Remembering in prayer the storm victims of this past weekend.

I like that song and love that psalm. So many sad stories from the tornadoes and floods, but some good ones too of people pitching in to help others.

A beautiful Psalm and I, too, remember Mother loving the Lamplighter song.

Oh- I remember those black, black country nights when we would have an ice storm and lose power. I would have to go out to the barn late to check the cows were okay and it was always so spooky going in with just a small flashlight.

Praying for all of those that have been hit by all the horrible storms. xo Diana

I remember the song as well, and pray those that died or were injured in the storms this week, will find comfort with our Lord.

I remember that beautiful song. My brother lives in the country and when nighttime comes it is soooo dark. No city lights and no street lights. But it seems the stars and moon shine brighter when I'm there. When I drift from God's Word I feel that same darkness in my soul, I need God's light to brighten my way.

Lovely post. At a church we attended many years ago, we belonged to a Sunday School class called the Lamplighters.

My mom used to sing that song, too.

What a wonderful thought about God's light in the darkness. I love that verse. Thank you!

I remember hearing that song as a child...I think my dad had it on a record. I love it. And yes, a wonderful tribute to those who have lost more than just their "lights" in the storms...praying for those families who have lost everything. May the Lord be their Light and strength in the days to come. As He is our LIGHT every day...we would be so lost in darkness without Him. Thank you for this post. Very touching.
