Treasure Hunt

My son, if you take my words to heart
and treasure my commands within you,
 if you pay close attention to wisdom,
and let your mind reach for understanding,
 if indeed you call out for insight,
if you ask aloud for understanding,
if you search for wisdom as if it were money
 and hunt for it as if it were hidden treasure
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and you will find the knowledge of God.
The Lord gives wisdom.
 From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

God Has Not Changed His Mind or His Word

This morning, I was reading Psalm 119:

Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven. vs 89

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. vs 105

I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure. vs 162

I was thrilled to see the March for Life today in Washington D.C. I am praying for America and our leaders to seek God for wisdom from His holy word.

When These Pictures Develop

I've had many experiences in my lifetime. Some good and some bad, and though the events are history, the memories have stayed with me. I even have photographs of some of them.

Before the digital age, we had a polaroid instant camera, so we wouldn't have to wait overnight to have the film developed. Yet, even as great as instant pictures were, in certain conditions, some were blurry or dark.

The Lord showed me how this was like the memories of my life. Not all of them have been developed yet. Not all of them make sense now. Not all of them are pleasant.  Some I want to hide, and others I wish I could forget about.

But God says in His Word that He has never left us or forsaken us. At the end of my life, and sometimes along the way, I'm going to see something different about those memories....

When these pictures develop...

I'm going to see JESUS standing there with me in every one!

We can ask Jesus to show us where He was in our memories. No matter how alone or forsaken we may have felt at times, Jesus has always been right there, causing all things to work together for our good, watching over us. He wants us to know that even in present and future struggles, He is right here with us. All we have to do is call upon His name and believe that He is our helper.
Written by my son, Cameron Hill

"I will never fail you.
I will never abandon you,"
So we can say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper,
I will have no fear.
What can mere people do to me?”

Shadow of Your Wings

On my bed I remember You;
I think of You through the watches of the night.
Because You are my help,
I sing in the shadow of Your wings,
I cling to You;
Your right hand upholds me.
Psalm 63:6-7

He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
Psalm 91:4

The Comfort of a Friend

Charlie Brown was pitching in the neighborhood softball game, and pitching poorly. Lucy was giving him a lot of grief. As the criticism continued, Charlie Brown could bear it no longer. In frustration, he stood on his head in humiliation right there on the pitcher's mound.

Seeing his friend's pain, loyal Snoopy walked out and stood on his head beside Charlie Brown.

Don't you hate it when you are really hurting and someone tells you to just put a smile on your face?

The Bible tells us:
"Laugh with your happy friends when they're happy;
share tears when they're down."
Romans 12:15 Message

Everlasting Love

We need never shout across the spaces to an absent God.
He is nearer than our own soul,
closer than our most secret thoughts.
A.W. Tozer
I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with loving-kindness.

Come Hungry!

In the old days our family might get out and go for a drive and drop in to visit a friend or relative. Daddy's Cousin Martha was always glad to have company and never failed to offer us something to eat.

If we wanted to make her happy, we'd better not go when we had full stomachs! She insisted that we sit down at the kitchen table and have some cake or pie. But she wasn't satisfied for us to only have one helping!

"Oh, it ain't fit to eat!" she'd apologize, hinting for more compliments. "This ain't as good as I usually make, is it?" I was never sure how to answer that question!

I couldn't help thinking of Martha's generous heart and fragrant kitchen when our pastor said that the only requirement for coming to the Lord Jesus is to "come hungry"!

In His famous "Sermon on the Mount" Jesus assured us: "You're blessed when you've worked up a good appetite for God. He's food and drink in the best meal you'll ever eat." Matthew 5:6 Message

January Project

Granddaughter Kaedyn (age 7) is helping me color some pictures to decorate the fridge. We need some color for January! I printed John 3:16 from the computer and we colored it with crayons. She wants to find other verses that she has memorized this year to add to it.
After her Mom picked her up, I found this nice note from her taped on the mirror in my bathroom.
This looks just like me, and yes that is a bow in my hair!

My Shield

Psalm 18:2
The Lord is my Rock, my Fortress, and my Deliverer; my God, my keen and firm Strength in Whom I will trust and take refuge, my Shield, and the Horn of my salvation, my High Tower.

The Snowman Who Would Not Melt

It was a sunny spring day in Buford, Georgia. The kids and I went for a walk - tossing our sweaters aside. What a surprise to wake the next morning to 5 inches of snow! As I busied myself in the house, the kids were enlisting the neighbors to help build a BIG snowman - right under my clothes line! Just like in the storybook, they rolled the snowballs round and packed them tight.

Soon the sun was shining and the birds were singing, and the snow disappeared - everywhere but under my clothesline. It seems Mr. Snowman would never melt, and when he did, he left a muddy puddle for me to wade through with my clean white sheets!

I used to love the smell of sheets that had dried in the sun and fresh air, but all these years later I treasure the sound of the kids having fun even more!

Majestic Sweetness

This old hymn really blessed me this morning. I struggle with sadness in January because my son was so very sick and then died on January 28. Even though it was 21 years ago, I still miss him, but I know he is with Jesus, so I love the thought that Jesus is ''majestic sweetness". Caleb's weak heart gave out, so I cherish the phrase: "Had I a thousands hearts to give, Lord, they should all be Thine."
Maybe there is someone else that this hymn will encourage today. (The nature photos are pretty.)

Song in Your Heart

Three of us ladies in my apartment building started meeting for worship, prayer and Bible study yesterday. It was such a blessing. We are going to study the letters of Paul: Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians. It may take us a while!

God's Love Has No Limits

He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater,
He sendeth more strength when the labors increase;
To added afflictions He addeth His mercy,
To multiplied trials His multiplied peace.

When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,
When we reach the end of our hoarded resources
Our Father’s full giving is only begun.

Fear not that thy need shall exceed His provision,
Our God ever yearns His resources to share;
Lean hard on the arm everlasting, availing;
The Father both thee and thy load will upbear.

His love has no limits, His grace has no measure,
His power no boundary known unto men;
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus
He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.

God is taking your picture

At the end of the day, sometimes I feel like I haven't accomplished a lot, but I came across a journal entry that encouraged me that maybe there are things we do that are worthwhile to other people that we don't even realize.

You know how teachers tell young students," I'm watching to catch someone being good today"? Our Bible study leader, Fawn, said to our team who was visiting the nursing home, "Do you know that God is taking your picture right now, and putting it on his fridge? He is happy that you came to let His love flow through you."

We can preach and sing, and that is good, but something people will remember when we're gone is how we made them feel when we sat with them, listened, smiled, and looked them in the eyes, when we held their hands to pray, or spoke a kind word.

Blessings from Above

“The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it. You will live in joy and peace. The mountains and hills will burst into song, and the trees of the field will clap their hands!" Isaiah 55:10-12

This is a neighbor's cat. His name is Kris and he is a feisty critter. He is trying to slap the camera out of my hand.
"No photos, please," he says.
When the owner walks their large dog, Kris proudly walks about five yards ahead of her, as if he is the drum major in a parade.

The weatherman says we will wake up to our first snow this winter in southern Indiana tomorrow morning. Here are pics from snows in past years.

The clouds are hanging low and gray
Yes, I think it will snow today.
The smell of snow is in the air
Is that a snowflake in your hair?

Pay No Attention to Their Insults

Listen now, you who know right from wrong,
you who hold my teaching inside you:
Pay no attention to insults, and when mocked
don't let it get you down.

Isaiah 51:7-8 Message

When I was subbing in fourth grade a while back I took the students to the public school library and one little boy decided to check out the Bible that week. Back in the classroom, some of the boys gave him a hard time about it.

"I can't believe you checked THAT out! Why are you reading THAT?" they asked.

The nine year old didn't let it bother him. As he was reading  - I overheard him explaining to his friends, "See those words in red? That's because Jesus is Lord!"

Thank you, Father God, that out of the mouths of babies and children you have prepared praise for yourself!
Matthew 21:16

"This is what I want you to do: Ask the Father for whatever is in keeping with the things I've revealed to you. Ask in my name, according to my will, and he'll most certainly give it to you. Your joy will be a river overflowing its banks!"
John 16:23-24 Message

HAVE YOU ASKED? A missionary was witnessing to a man who was in a desperate situation. Fabian tried to tell him about his own faith in Jesus Christ, but the man said he didn't believe in Jesus. Finally Fabian asked him, "Have you ever just asked Jesus to reveal Himself to you?"
The man got down on his knees and began his prayer with, "Oh Lord". Then he began to cry out Jesus, Jesus. He was born again and is now a disciple.

You can hear Fabian's very encouraging message on VIMEO He begins speaking at 3.40 and speaks for 14 minutes. Awesome to hear what God is doing in a war torn country.

Victory in Christ

Sometimes I sit and dwell on mistakes I made in years past, but  I was encouraged by my devotional reading this morning from Corrie ten Boom:

"Lord, it is sometimes hard for us to see our victories, but we know that they are there. Thank You that Your Word tells us so clearly that together with You, we stand on victory ground."

We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us.
2 Cor. 4:7

A picture came to mind of Daddy lining his walkway with luminaries on Christmas Eve. They shone so brightly in the dark, even though they were just brown lunch bags. Until he lit the candles, they had no beauty of their own.
